Take care of that pain in the neck

Published February 24, 2001 in the Campbell River Weekender

I am seeing a lot of tendinitis, bursitis and inflammatory neck conditions including whiplash and thought you would like to know how to treat these with out using the harsh anti-inflammatories like Celebrex and Ibuprofen.

Tendinitis and bursitis are inflammatory conditions of the tendon and bursae respectfully. Tendons connect bone to the muscle and bursae are small fluid filled sacs located between tendons and bone in various places in the body. The most common site of injury is the shoulder (frozen shoulder), hip, and elbow (tennis elbow). Symptoms of bursitis include redness, swelling and dull persistent aching. Tendinitis symptoms include sharp pain on certain movements. It is imperative to begin treatment immediately as symptoms can escalate quickly forcing immobilization and lost time from work.

Anti-inflammatories such as Celebrex and Ibuprofen can cause deficiencies of folic acid. Folic acid deficiency harms DNA metabolism which causes abnormal cellular development especially in cells with the most rapid rates of turnover ie red blood cells, white blood cells, epithelial cells of the stomach, intestine, vagina and cervix. It is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies as it is easily destroyed by light, heat and oxygen. If you need to take these drugs make sure you supplement with this common B vitamin. It is usually found in most B complex vitamins. Anti-inflammatories are also known for their aggravation to the stomach and intestines. In learning how to take natural anti-inflammatories you can avoid these aggravations and get good results as well!

The number one remedy I consistently recommend is homeopathic Arnica. This plant when made into a homeopathic remedy is the first one I think of for trauma. It should be given in high potencies such as 200C or 1M for the best results. These are often only available from professionals such as ND’s. When properly prescribed the trauma from concussion as well as any physical or emotional trauma can be greatly reduced using this remedy. I have had surgeons comment on how rapidly incisions heal without swelling and with reduced pain after all kinds of surgery including dental work. There is also available Arncia cream or Traumeel cream which when applied topically to inflammed tendons and bursae can be a very effective adjunctive.

Another of my favorites is bromelain and curcumin. Bromelain is a common digestive enzyme but when taken one hour before or two hours after eating, works as a fantastic anti-inflammatory in the systemic circulation. Curcumin, known commonly as tumeric, also has wonderful anti-inflammatory qualites that potentiate the effect of bromelain and can reduce all the symptoms of tendinitis and bursitis.

In addition to the above I usually recommend icing as much as possible. Ice is a wonderful natural medicine. So if your injury feels better with cold, ice for 20 minutes four times per day until the inflammation is reduced. After icing apply the Arnica cream and within a couple of days you will feel that you are gaining control of your symptoms. Other nutritional recommendations include making sure you are getting enough good quality calcium and magnesium and B 12 injections for bursitis. Adjunctive therapies I also recommend are non-force chiropractic treatments, massage therapy, acupuncture and physiotherapy. Don’t delay in treating these conditions. Once they are chronic they are much more difficult to turn around!
