A Day in the Life of a Naturopath
Published June 28, 2006 in the North Island MidWeek
What follows are the small details and battles of an average day in my office. Specific information has been changed to protect the privacy of my patients.
I arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 am to leave time to go over the charts for the day and to look at my emails. Between 9 and 10 I check BP’s, give injections and take blood for bloodwork. This particular morning I checked the blood pressure of a 65 year old woman. Her blood pressure is coming down nicely with my treatment, but I encourage her to continue checking it first thing in the morning for another few weeks just to make sure and I will check her one more time.
Shoulder bursitis in a 55 year old woman who is responding to weekly B12 injections and her energy and sleep is improving too!
I do three blood draws then give a 15 year old girl an injection for her bronchitis that has not been going away with antibiotics. I give her a homeopathic injection and, to take home, my “Upper Respiratory” formula as well as my “natural antibiotic” regime that worked well with her last year.
It is now 10 am and my first new patient of the day is a woman in early 50’s who has had chronic migraine headaches for years and now being peri-menopausal has tipped her over the edge! I prescribe magnesium glycinate, get her off more migraine triggers in her diet, recommend that she get Electrodermal testing for food allergies as well as a complete chemistry blood test that will let me know if she has other problems including thyroid, liver, cholesterol or anemia issues. I will see her in 2 weeks once her blood tests are back and I will do a complete physical exam as well as EAV (electrodermal organ evaluation) testing with her then.
11 am Another new patient, this a 45 year old male with hepatitis C. He is doing well but wants my opinion on a more comprehensive herbal program. He has not had a complete liver panel done in a while so we schedule that and I get him on the “triad” treatment for Hep C as well as talk to him about other nutrients important for the liver health. I schedule to see him in 2 weeks once the blood test results are back.
12 noon A 35 year old male with asthma. He is doing better on my regime, not having to use his puffers as much and generally feeling better. I re-evaluate the UNDA homeopathic remedies I have him taking, using my EAV machine, as well as sharing with him a new herbal formula I have learned about from attending a recent naturopathic conference. I will have him alternate the two herbal formulas as this case of asthma is very tough!
1-2 pm Lunch time. I take 15 minutes to eat, but I really have to return a call from a patient who has some pressing concerns as well as try to find a replacement for an herbal formula that I can no longer get into Canada. My staff are excellent at dealing with many issues that come up at the front desk and I respond to their questions during this hour.
2 pm I see a 65 year old male who has chronic prostatitis and we are reviewing the PSA (prostate specific antigen) I did last week. He has been doing well on the herbal tonics and homeopathic remedies we have been using and his PSA blood test readings are back to normal. I don’t have to see him again for 6 months while he continues a maintenance program.
2:45 pm 41 year old female who is suffering from anxiety and depression. I am doing a complete physical exam with her and find that her blood pressure is too low and her EAV readings show adrenal fatigue so I treat her using my favourite herbs and nutrients for the adrenal glands including pantothenic acid and licorice. In this case she likes licorice and so she will also drink the tea. I have also tested her with the REBA device and prescribed Rubimeds with which she is doing well, so these are continued as previously prescribed. She is sleeping much better with them.
3:30-4:30 pm New patient 68 year old male, who is complaining of “feeling funny in the head”. I take a complete history and then do a physical exam and find his blood pressure is too high at 150/90, so I send him home with my blood pressure treatment program. I ask him to check his BP every morning on waking as well as with me in the office weekly until it is controlled. He is to call me on my pager if he has a change in symptoms.
4:30-5:15 pm 2 year old male with eczema head to toe! Mom has been very good at giving him flaxoil orally as well as using it topically. She has also eliminated wheat from his diet and given the homeopathic remedies I prescribed. He is somewhat improved over the last month. I reassure the mom saying it will take quite a few more months yet to be rid of it entirely but that he is responding well.
5:15-6 pm 47-year-old woman who is coming in for a yearly check up. I do a PAP and breast exam and review the blood work she has done with her MD. I suggest that her thyroid is under-functioning and that her liver enzymes are creeping up along with her cholesterol. I suggest that once the thyroid is optimized her cholesterol will normalize and a good cleansing program will help to lower her liver enzymes.
I check my emails again before leaving for the day and vow to come in at 8:30am the next morning to tackle my inbox which is very full after the days work!
