In 2006, I vow to...

Looking back over the year we often can see the negative things more than we can see the positive, so I ask you to reflect over the last year and see what small changes you have made to improve your health.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Did you get out walking a bit more? Even if it was only three times per week, there is enough research now that concludes that this is the best form of exercise overall. Soren Kierkegaard, philosopher said "Above all do not lose your desire to walk: Every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts". Fredrich Nietzsche states, "Never trust a thought that didn't come by walking".

2. Did you try and eat less wheat? There are tasty rice or rye crackers and 100% rye breads that people are very happy to switch to if they can lose the weight, feel more energy and have improvement of their skin.

3. Have you tried to eat more protein and less carbohydrates? The cereal isle in the grocery stores should be labelled "Diabetes in a box". If you avoid these kinds of carbohydrates you will more readily lose weight and control your blood sugars.

4. Did you do some sort of cleansing program at least once? We have a simple homeopathic Detox Kit from Heel for those who just can't get around to changing their diet for one to two weeks.

5. Did you make an effort to drink one to two more glasses of water per day? I suggest that people keep a water jug in the washroom as a reminder and whenever they use the toilet to drink another 8 ounces.

6. Did you try and get more sleep? The research states that the average human needs 9 hours per night, so make sure you are getting what you need.

7. Did you start taking a good quality cod liver oil supplement? Taking a tablespoon daily 4-5 times per week will prevent strokes, improve your brain power, help with irritability, make your skin smoother and much much more! Come in for a free taste test and be pleasantly surprised. If fish oils don't taste good then they are rancid!

8. Have you added 200 mcg selenium to your supplement routine? It reduces the incidence of prostate cancer by 65%! It is good for women too for thyroid health and the prevention of most cancers.

9. Do you take B complex? This reduces the risk of heart disease by 60%. There isn't a drug on the market that does that!

10. Are you asking your MD for the numbers of your blood tests? Just knowing the numbers are "normal" may not be the "optimal" health you are looking for. Once you know your numbers ie your cholesterol, your liver enzymes or your blood sugars you can go to my website and look at my sample lab report and see for yourself how optimal you are.

11. Are you keeping a gratitude journal with your family? At the dinner table I suggest taking turns talking about five good things that happened to you that day. You will find yourself recognizing good things as they are happening and saying to yourself: this needs to go into the gratitude journal!

12. Are you creating your own heaven on earth? In these tough times it behooves us to change the things we can and to have the wisdom to know what we cannot change. The first step towards this is to read the news in the paper or listen to it on the radio, no more than once per day and to avoid the TV version. Try and see the world through the eyes of a child.

I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Healing Holiday!
