NATUROPATHIC WISDOM NOTES

FROM THE DESK OF DR. INGRID PINCOTT, ND

IT'S SUMMER TIME!

You may have noticed a new face around the office. We are happy to have Athena Glinsman as our new colon therapist. If you haven't yet had colonics at our office, now is the time to take advantage of Athena's expertise. She gives a wonderful healing experience with the colonic, and she makes you feel so proud to be cleansing!

Most of the lectures that Dr. Pincott gives are completed for this season. If you would like to keep informed of future lectures you may request to be included on our mailing list.

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) versus Zantac (ranitidine) and Tagamet (cimetidine) for ulcers and gastritis. Amount of healing (complete reduction of symptoms) with DGL was equal to the other two drugs and significantly greater than placebo. While there were many side effects with Zantac and Tagamet (nausea, constipation, diarrhea) there were no side effects with DGL.

Headache medicines may cause headaches. It is estimated that roughly 70% of individuals with chronic daily headaches suffer from headaches as a result of overuse or abuse of either analgesics or ergotamine. In most cases of chronic headache patients would be better off discontinuing the drug approach and instead focus on addressing underlying factors such as food allergies, stress, and supplemental deficiencies.

Black Cohash, Cimicifuga or Remifemin has recently arrived from Germany to Canada as a wonderful alternative to hormone replacement therapy in the treatment of the symptoms of menopause: hot flushes, insomnia, irritability and vaginal dryness. It is also used for the treatment of PMS. Remifemin has no toxic side effects, it is safe for long term therapy, and is safe for patients whose diagnosis contraindicates hormone therapy, ie estrogen sensitive breast cancers. It's use in the treatment of osteoporosis is still being investigated. 6.5 million units are sold yearly in Europe!

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) on January 18th 1996 released the study which indicated that beta carotene does not cure smoking induced lung cancer and may actually provoke or instigate tumor activity. NCI, which funded this study as well the 1994 Finnish study, has been a consistent enemy of dietary supplementation. Both studies had flawed research methodology. Both studies used synthetic beta-carotene, which points to the value of natural mixed carotenes and antioxidants. Synthetic beta-carotene can be likened to the trans configuration found in margarine which the body can not utilize. Mixed carotenes are found in fruits and vegetables. There are over 200 scientific studies that have shown that antioxidants, including beta-carotene play a major role in preventing cancer and heart disease.

Exercise is the best natural antidepressant. In recent studies it has been shown to equal the effect of cognitive therapy and conventional antidepressants. Aerobic activity every other day will exorcise those blues.

A new study shows that 400 IU's of vitamin E per day reduces the risk of a heart attack by 75%. This vitamin was shown to be more effective than aspirin and cholesterol lowering drugs.

Unique Vitamin E is the only Vitamin E on the market that is un-esterfied. Esterification loses the antioxidant quality of vitamin E. Unique contains no soy oil diluent that turns rancid and dilutes that mixed tocopherol content. This is the only form of vitamin E that assures all four vital functions of vitamin E; prevents clots, natural antioxidant, prevention and diminishing of scar tissue, and dilates blood vessels. The dosage is based on 400IU per 40 pounds of body weight, and because it isn't stored in the body is recommended indefinitely.
