It’s a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.

Happy Spring Solstice!
Well most of the painting is completed at the office and the Mediterranean colours are very warm. Come pay us a visit and see for yourself. By the time you have received this Naturopathic Medicine Week will be upon us. The dates are Mar 25th to Mar 31st here in Campbell River. As a service to the public we are offering free medical tests including blood sugar, blood pressure and urine dip. This will be an annual event the last week of March every year. Mark your calendar for next year if you missed this one!
Due to the rising costs of postage we will no longer be mailing out our newsletter. You may pick up a copy any time from the office. We often keep the two latest issues at the front desk. We will also be including them in our mail orders and of course sending them by email. I hope you are keeping well and don’t forget about your spring cleanse which is coming up in April!
Denmark Becomes First to Ban Heavy Metals
Despite vigorous opposition from a majority of the European Union's members, the government of Denmark recently announced its decision to impose a wide ranging ban on cadmium, nickel, mercury and lead. Danish Environment Minister Svend Auken "Lead is found in so many products that forbidding its use in individual [ones] is not sufficient." Products affected are to include those such as plastic stabilizers, as well as metallic lead used for ballasts and weights. The first products will be banned in March 2001, with others phased in over several years to provide time to develop alternatives. Twelve of the fifteen European Commission scientific committee members stated Denmark's ban on lead for health reasons is scientifically unjustified. The committee claims the legal intake limits for lead in children are probably not being violated, but accedes that the current levels may have been set too high. "Levels of lead in blood previously thought safe by the World Health Organization might in fact be dangerous," the committee said. The CSTEE is to "review the appropriateness" of current intake requirements "in the near future."

Ed: Heavy metal toxicity can cause most chronic diseases. A simple hair analysis will give you quantitative levels of metals as well as minerals in your body. Detoxification of heavy metals can be done taking oral or intravenous medication. The important thing is to reduce your metal load by removing amalgams from your teeth and once those are gone, deeper detoxification can be started. We offer oral detoxification programs and protocols for the removal of mercury amalgams.
Panel puts estrogen on cancer list
Submitted by Walter Crinnion, ND
In a follow-up to last month's EEOH update, the National Toxicology Program's (NTP) Board of Counselors recommended that "steroidal estrogens be listed as a known cause of cancer in humans." Steroidal estrogens, used in menopause therapy and contraceptives, are associated with an increased risk of uterine, endometrial, and breast cancers. The board did not recommend restricting the hormones' uses. Listing estrogen as a cancer agent might promote discussion between patient and doctor about the hormones' risks and benefits, the panel said. The board met December 13-15 to review chemical nominations for the 10th Report of Carcinogens due out in 2002.
Advisory panel on federal report on carcinogens makes recommendations to NIEHS/NTP for new listings. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (Press Release, Online), 15 Dec 00. InteliHealth (Online), 15 Dec 00.
Ed: This is a very important announcement that will have huge implications as it is accepted around the world. In the meantime, if you are taking some sort of estrogen you may wish to consult with a naturopathic physician to see if there might be a safer form of treatment and consider using Indolplex. (Tyler Encapsulations), which helps the body convert tumor forming estrogens into tumor protective estrogens. See my July/August, 2000 newsletter for more information.
One out of every 55 women will develop ovarian cancer. It is very difficult to diagnose on a standard physical exam as the symptoms mimic other disorders like irritable bowel syndrome. The main complaints are abdominal bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea. There is a test that should be done as part of your yearly exam called the CA-125 cancer marker. It is similar to the PSA or prostate specific antigen used to diagnose prostate cancer in men, except the CA-125 may be more accurate in its diagnosis of ovarian cancer than the PSA is in diagnosing prostate cancer. The test costs $95.70 in my office. Doctors will not be inclined to offer this test for free on the MSP unless warranted so you may contact your insurance company for coverage of a test that your doctor won’t order. Even if you had a total hysterectomy with both ovaries removed you can develop Primary Peritoneal Cancer which is the same cancer only not in the ovaries. The test is suggested for any woman as ovarian cancer happens in all age groups of women.
Chemical mixture associated with Parkinson's Disease
Submitted by Walter Crinnion, ND
Results reported in the Dec. 15 Journal of Neuroscience indicate a particular combination of pesticides may be linked to Parkinson's disease. Exposing male rats to a combination of two common pesticides, the herbicide paraquat and the fungicide maneb, creates the same brain damage patterns as researchers see in human brains in the early stages of Parkinson's disease. The most striking similarity is that important dopamine-producing brain cells die, which eventually leads to the characteristic shakes and loss of muscle control associated with the disease. Rats exposed to only one of the compounds did not have the brain damage patterns. The chemicals are widely used together on millions of acres of US farms to control pests on food, cotton, and other crops. This study, one of the first to test and find effects with a mixture of chemicals, suggests synergistic effects from chemical mixtures may influence health and proves a strong environmental link for Parkinson's disease.

.Ed: It is impossible to avoid all of the chemical exposures we have in the world, but what can be done is support the liver in detoxification. Detoxification Factors by Tyler Encapsulations has everything the liver needs to help you get rid of chemicals in your body. If you work in a highly chemical environment I recommend that you take this fairly regularly in addition to your cleansing programs three to four times per year. See Dr. Bennett’s and Barrie’s book "7-Day Detox Miracle"
Fish Could Be Alternative to Ritalin
Dr Basant Puri, a consultant and senior lecturer at Hammersmith Hospital in Ireland has been using sophisticated imaging techniques to study the role of fatty acids in brain function. He says he has unearthed a wealth of evidence about how supplementation with specific fatty acids can not only help those with ADD/ADHD (attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder), but also dyslexia and dyspraxia. Puri said the findings showed that it may be prudent to try a safe nutritional solution in the first instance before using psycho stimulants such an Ritalin. Fatty acids could also be taken by those already on Ritalin, he added. Fatty acids are important for the brain growth of all children and particularly so for those with learning conditions, he said.
Ed: We provide these in the form of Eskimo 3 capsules or DHA capsules. Flaxoil may not be strong enough in these conditions. They come in small strawberry flavored capsules that can be chewed in the case of younger children or swallowed.
Bill Moyers special report exposing the Chemical Industry on PBS
March 26, 8:00 PM – "Trade Secrets: A Moyers Report". Modern times bring modern problems. In the past 50 years, more than 75,000 chemicals have been released into the environment. What happens when the human body absorbs them? Who is responsible for making sure they are safe? Be sure and watch this special to learn what is really going on.
