Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

Happy New Year!
Make this year a year of taking baby steps. Baby steps towards any goal that you have, whether if be for your spirit, health, family, friends, finances or creativity. The way to begin a journey of 1000 miles is to start with the first step. Any goal when broken down into mini steps is achievable. Bonne Chance!

Lessons from a three-year-old!
My grandson has taught me three lessons lately.

  1. When you have completed a task large or small, throw your arms up and exclaim with glee "I did it!" When you do this you are patting yourself on the back. A pat that you are not likely to get from anyone else so why not give it to yourself!
  2. When you like something tell someone: "I like that". It has the effect of making your thoughts known even on small things.
  3. "Look it!" This is a variation on the first one but rings different. If you say this to those around you about an accomplishment you have just completed or are in the process of doing, you give yourself encouragement. A badly needed commodity in this busy world of ours.

Autism and the MMR Vaccine:
Dr. Andrew Wakefield and Dr. Bernard Rimland are MD’s active in the research of the safety of the MMR vaccine. According to them the most likely explanation for the current epidemic of Autism and ADHD is the combined MM in the MMR.

In a lecture given by Dr. Wakefield last year on vaccinations and their safety he brings up several points:

  1. Children are given 33 vaccines before entering school.
  2. Thimerosal is the main preservative found in vaccines and is a mercury derivative. Children have 237 mcg of mercury in their bodies by the time they are two, well over the safe limit. Even minute amounts of mercury are highly toxic to the nerve and immune system. FDA states these are safe doses of mercury!
  3. Not enough safety studies have been done.
  4. Too many vaccines are given too close together.
  5. Other common additives are aluminum and formaldehyde.
  6. Epidemic increase of Autism in the last 9 years secondary to immunization.
  7. Mercury is passed in utero to fetus from sources such as fish, amalgams, Rhogam, flu and pneumococcal vaccine.
  8. Mercury poisoning superimposes the symptoms of Autism. These symptoms include: lack of eye contact, speech delay, poor concentration, self- injurous behavior, sound and touch sensitivity heightened, social withdrawal.
  9. The MMR should not have been licensed in 1998 because there was insufficient evidence of its safety and the decision to license was premature.
  10. The onset of Autism in the 1960’s to the early 80’s was at birth. Since this new triple vaccine was introduced the onset of autism was 18 months of age.
  11. What these doctors oppose is overvaccination and unsafe vaccines.
  12. Autism has been linked to the 1977 DPT vaccine as well. There is a safer version called DTaP.
  13. Hepatitis B vaccine has been associated with neurological, rheumatologic, vascular and skin side effects.
  14. Clinical trials and adverse reactions are not available for Hepatitis B vaccine.
  15. There is a 25-50% increase incidence of developing insulin dependent diabetes after the following vaccines: DPT, HiB, MMR, Anthrax, BCG, and Hep B.
  16. Adverse reactions to vaccines are reported only 10% of the time.
  17. No long term controlled studies on the safety of vaccines have been done, even after one hundred million doses.
  18. 1998 France suspends the use of Hep B vaccine in teens when the company making it was sued over the possible link between the Hep B vaccine and the development of MS in a young girl.

Safety precautions you can take now:

  1. Use thimerosal free vaccines
  2. Space out the vaccines giving only one at a time. Measles given at 15 months, mumps at 21 months, and rubella at 27months. Hep B in children over two years of age and not to teens.
  3. Give Vitamin C and B complex before and after vaccinations.
  4. Use DTaP instead of DPT.
  5. If allergic to yeast avoid Hep B, to eggs avoid MMR, and neomycin avoid MMR and varicella.
  6. Boost immune system in other ways such as cod liver oil for Vitamin A, use echinacea and other immune boosting herbs.
  7. Have your child titered for vaccines at the age of 4-5 to see the need for boosters.
  8. Don’t immunize the child if they have any kind of infection.

Dr. Andrew Wakefield MD has his paper published in the Journal of Adverse Drug Reactions entitled "Measles mumps rubella vaccine: Through a glass darkly". This will create a stir as it had supportive editorial review. Hopefully we will see the MMR in its combined form withdrawn soon and separate vaccines in their place. More Oxygen:
In a study of 500 surgery patients researchers found that increasing the concentration of inhaled oxygen from 30- 80% during surgery and for two hours afterwards cut the infection rate in half! The additional oxygen appears to enhance the immune function in ways not yet determined.

Ed: the recent news told of the new oxygen service available at the Calgary airport to help passengers fighting jet lag is encouraging. I think this treatment will be found to help more than just jet lag. I suggest taking extra anti-oxidants pre and post surgery and during and after flights such as our Oxyguard Forte will go along way to preventing jet lag, clots forming and infections.

Mammograms: Do we need them?
The University of Toronto released the results of a study indicating that mammograms have no benefit to women between the ages of 50-59. For an information package on adverse effects of mammogram use over several years contact HANS.

Recipe

East Indian Curried Vegetables with Chickpeas

1 Cauliflower, cubed

1 Tbs. Coconut Butter

1 can Coconut Milk

1.5 # Potatoes, cubed

1 cup Onions, diced

2 cups Spinach, chopped

1 cup frozen peas

1-3 Tbs. Curry Paste, mild-hot

1/2-1 can Chickpeas, drained

Scrub the potatoes, rinse the cauliflower and trim away any blemished areas. Cut into bite-size cubes and place into a steamer basket. Fill the bottom of steamer with two inches of water and set to boil over high heat. Once boiling, lower heat to high simmer and allow to cook for 12-15 minutes. Once veggies are tender, remove steamer from heat and place into kitchen sink. Rinse with cold water (blanche) for a few minutes until cooked vegetables are cooled down. This will slow down the cooking process.

While vegetables are steaming, melt coconut butter over medium-high heat in a frying pan. Add the onions to the pan once butter is hot. Sauté until golden, stir in the curry paste and lower heat to a simmer. Pour in the coconut milk and allow sauce to reduce over very low heat for 10-12 minutes. Once sauce is thickened somewhat, remove pan from heat, stir in the chopped spinach and peas cover with fitted lid and allow to stand for a few minutes. The heat from the sauce will wilt the spinach without overcooking it.

Once you are ready to assemble the meal, fold the curried sauce into the steamed vegetables add the chickpeas and serve hot. Best served with fragrant, organic brown basmati rice. This recipe makes 6-8 servings. Any leftovers will freeze well in sealed containers. To reheat, place into a casserole dish with 2-3 Tbs. of water and transfer into a 250-degree oven for 18-20 minutes until evenly warmed through. Garnish with sesame seeds or chopped cilantro.

New at the office:

Reminder that we offer 10% off office visits to HANS members and also to family members that are under the same roof.

Oxidata tests in packages of three are $55.00. This enables those of you who have 0 or +3 results to monitor yourself at home! This simple in office test measures the antioxidants in your body, which are important in the prevention of most diseases.

We notice that folks are still showing up at the office on Mondays when we are closed. Perhaps if we said "Closed Mondays" instead of our office hours that would help!

I am offering a free Candida test for anyone. It takes less than five minutes. If you want to see what your score is give Hayley a call. We do this between our longer appointments.

Thank you for your testimonial letters. Keep them coming!
