In this issue I will, as usual, give you updates on new and old medicines with which I am getting good results in the clinic, as well as some new tests we are offering in my continuing effort to bring the best of good medicine to Campbell River. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in France this fall. So don’t be surprised on coming to the office in the New Year to find the colours of Provence on my office walls in my eternal efforts to bring a bit of heaven to earth for my enjoyment right now. I hope this season brings love and blessings to your household. Please let us know ways in which we can serve you better in the year 2001!
I presented at the Teen Wellness Show Nov 19th 2000 at South Park high school. My experience showed me that kids are aware of the stressors in their lives and they do want to do something about them. My topic was healthy junk food and most of the hour was spent eating! I brought samples of healthy snacks. I have created handouts for these snack suggestions as well as some simple tips for teen wellness. You may wish to contact the office for copies and look at my website for my new chapter on Teen Wellness. I would be happy to present this same workshop to other teens. Call me at the office.
One of the topics that I didn’t have time to emphasize to the students was the negative effects of using artificial sweeteners namely aspartame which is mainly found in chewing gum and soft drinks as NutriSweet and Equal. Juicy fruit gum is the only gum made with real sugar!
Low Fat or Low Sugar foods
If food is labelled as fat free it is usually loaded with aspartame or sugar.
Aspartame is the reason for 78% of the non-drug related complaints to the Food and Drug Administration. It can cause individual symptoms as well as mimic whole syndromes such as chronic fatigue and immune deficiency syndrome. Individual symptoms related to aspartame include: decreased vision, pain in the eyes, hearing impairment, headache, dizziness, confusion, memory loss, slurring of speech, drowsiness, numbness, tingling, depression, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, phobias, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, high blood pressure, weight gain, hair loss and thinning, excessive thirst, fluid retention, nausea and diarrhea! If this were a vitamin or herb the FDA would be quick to pull it off the market!
Aspartame is 10 % wood alcohol (methanol) which metabolizes in the body to form formaldehyde (toxic to the nervous system), formic acid and diketopiperazine (caused brain tumors in animal studies).
Aspartame is made by G.D. Searle a wholly owned subsidiary of Monsanto (the genetically modified soy man).
Aspartame approval and persistence in the market has everything to do with money and politics and almost nothing to do with science and reason. The Aspartame Consumer Safety Network can be reached at 214-352-4268 and references for this article came from
Deadly Deception by Mary Nash Stoddard. There is also an hour long video available.
Ed: Stevia a sweet food that is not an additive, is very safe for diabetics and helps in the metabolism of sugars in the body. It is available from naturopathic physicians.
Dietary Restriction, Aging and Disease Prevention
What single intervention will: result in loss of body fat, lower oxidative (aging) burden of the body, reduce one’s risk for cancer and diabetes, reduce elevated blood pressure, reduce blood fats, triglyercides, and fasting sugar levels, enhance DNA repair processes, improve sugar metabolism, and extend the quality and quantity of the human life span?
Fasting one day per week!
Top Clinical Nutr.1997;12(3):76-83
Ed: a few more suggestions might be to eat only two meals per day like the Seventh Day Adventists do. If your blood sugars won’t allow you to fast completely try the UltraClear products combined with Green Alive to maintain blood sugars. Call the office for our recipe.
Folic acid and Alzheimer’s Disease
The ongoing Nun study involving 678 nuns has indicated that in those who had Alzheimer’s at the time of death had low folic acid levels. Folic acid requirements may increase with age according to the authors.
Am J Clin Nutr, 71; 993-8
Osteoporosis starts during the teen years!
A study of 460 physically active high school girls found a five times greater risk of bone fracture in girls who drank soda compared to girls who did not. It is felt by researchers that the phosphoric acid in soda impairs bone development and is what leads to in the increased incidence of fracture in soda drinkers. According to the study’s author, the bone mass acquired during adolescents is related to the bone mass they have in older years, which has implications not only for the adolescent but the geriatric population as well.

Medicines old and new
AR Encap is our new glucosamine/ MSM combination which also contains the very effective anti-inflammatories bromelain, boswellia, devils claw and curcumin. We are getting very good results with the treatment of arthritis.
Quercitin
This is a powerful antioxidant, antihistamine and anticancer medicine that you will find to be every bit as good as those decongestants that have been banned from the drug stores these days. Fight cancer at the same time as you treat your congestion and allergy symptoms and avoid the side effects of drowsiness too!
New Handouts
All my published articles are available from my website. If you would like paper copies they are available free of charge at the office. We will be compiling a list of topics of all these articles for easy reference to back issues. The topics over the last two months are: How Do Prescription Drugs Affect Your Body, Dealing With Diabetes, Breast Cancer, and Estrogen Alert . We also have a handy Drug/Nutrient Interaction chart.
Paper copies of the recipes from my website are also available in the office for $1.00 My editor says I have run out of space for this issue so you will have to get this
newsletter's recipe from the website or the office.
Dental Handout
Are you planning on having dental work done? There are some simple precautions you can take to reduce inflammation, pain and to speed healing. If you are having your amalgams replaced with other materials there is a protocol to follow to minimize the toxic load of the mercury while it is being extracted. Call the office for details.
Tampons are dangerous and not only because of Toxic Shock Syndrome
Tampons contain rayon (for absorbency), dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching) and asbestos ( used to make women bleed more). Dioxin is carcinogenic and toxic to the immune and reproductive system. It has been linked to endometriosis and lowered sperm counts in men. There is no real acceptable level of exposure to dioxin given that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes in repeated contact and using 4-5 tampons per day, five days per month for 38 years is repeated contact! Countries such as Sweden, Germany and England have demanded a switch to safer tampons and safer bleaching techniques such as oxygen bleaching.
Safer tampons are made by Organic Essentials 1-800-765-6491 www.organicessentials.com and Terra Femme.
