Back To School Time and how to keep your kids healthy for the year
Most kids will come home with a cold within the first month of school. Here is a quick recipe for trying to prevent that. Thymulin and Influenzinum are the homeopathic remedies we use in the office for the whole family through out the school year. Start now, giving three doses of each only once a month. How easy can that be? If a cold or flu has already developed consider Esberitox chewable echinacea which everyone finds tasty. For those nasty chest infections Usnea Combination works everytime! It doesn’t taste good, but it works well. For real stubborn cases Defense Factors will prevent the use of antibiotics most everytime. For a routine supplement program: flaxoil or favored cod-liver oil, multivitamin/mineral (if chewable rinse out mouth with water afterwards as Vitamin C is hard on the enamel of the teeth). Extra Vitamin C keeps the immune system up as well as taking echinacea two weeks on and two weeks off all year long. Dr. Lendon-Smith recommends 1000mg per year of age! Watch for bowel complaints and reduce dosage if needed. For learning challenged children use DHA Junior, (a raspberry flavored chewable essential fat) or Efalex. ADFX is also helping some children according to Dr. Lyon in Nanaimo. Some simple diet suggestions: try using more herbal teas instead of juice for the kids; make your own juice boxes to avoid the aluminum lined boxes; provide snacks of soaked almonds and vegetable sticks on the kitchen table; avoid the calcium robbing soft drinks; and maintain blood sugar levels through out the school day by providing ample protein snacks.
I have several pregnant patients right now that need to know this information about cord clamping found in Dr. Northrup’s latest newsletter. Please talk to your midwife and obstetrician about this before your deliver.
At birth the babe goes from a water environment to one where his or her lungs must expand and begin the process of respiration. While this changeover takes place the umbilical cord pulsates so the baby still has the old oxygenation system in place. Clamping the cord immediately forces the baby to switch over much faster and gives the baby a feeling of panic, that there isn’t enough air. Babies often cry as soon as the cord is clamped for this reason.
According to Dr. George Morley who has delivered thousands of babies over 40 years, waiting three minutes after delivery before clamping the cord saves lives and assists in the oxygenation of the newborn. Up until 1950 this was common practice until it was felt that the baby could get under or over perfused leading to jaundice. According to Dr. Morley this premature clamping correlates to 100% interruption or elimination of placental transfusion. This can account for blood loss into the placenta, before the child has breathed and guarantees that moderate to severe infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) occurs in premature infants. In healthy babes born vaginally the contraction of the uterus at birth stimulates this transfer of blood, but if delivered by C-Section this does not occur. If the placenta is allowed to stop pulsating on its own, especially in premature babes and C-Section births, there is a 70% reduction of admissions to the intensive care unit for treatment of IRDS.

Kava kava compared to antianxiety drugs
A 25 week study with 101 outpatients clinic in Germany with various kinds of anxiety disorders including social phobia, agoraphobia and generalized anxiety, showed after 8 weeks of treatment with kava kava significant improvement. Contrary to the common treatments with drugs such as benzodiazepines and tryclycic antidepressants, withdrawal symptoms or development of dependency has not been found with kava kava. Other side effects as seen with these drugs are also not found.
Adverse effects are absent and kava kava was well tolerated. The authors conclude that kava extract was comparable to the antianxiety effect of bromazepam and oxazepam.
Herb Watch, Vol 2, Issue 2 Summer 2000
Ed: As with any drug, if you would like to discontinue therapy you should seek the consultation of your naturopathic physician or medical doctor. There are other concomitant treatments recommended along with kava kava to get the best results.
Ginseng and Breast Cancer Therapy
North American Ginseng was used in this study to determine if ginseng had a negative estrogen effect on breast cancer cell lines by causing their proliferation. This study indicates that this is not the case and there is no negative interaction with anticancer drugs used for breast cancer such as Tamoxifen. In fact when combined with such drugs the antiproliferative effect of the drugs was enhanced! Further studies need to be done according to the author.

Brushing too hard with hard toothbrushes causes tooth sensitivity, receding gums and wear around the roots of the teeth. 45% of all toothbrushes sold are the too stiff for proper brushing. Choose the softest toothbrush available. Other tricks to keeping your gums healthy besides flossing are taking adequate antioxidants such as Vitamin C, A, and CoQ10. Gum disease may be the first sign of CoQ10 deficiency. This antioxidant is also very important for heart and breast health.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is recommended by most Naturopathic Physicians as the best oil to use in cooking. However according to the website http://cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/food/oliveoil/index.html there are many brands that are diluting their oils. The brand I recommend is Bertolli’s.

Lipoic Acid:
Thiotene or lipoic acid is a small molecule soluble in both water and fats thus it readily crosses cell membranes and provides antioxidant protection inside as well as outside the cell. It chelates (binds) with iron, copper and cadmium; it regulates gene expression. When DNA undergoes oxidative stress which happens in any aging process, DNA is damaged. Thiotene prevents this damage. It recycles antioxidants. Thus it will extend the life of other antioxidants in the body such as Vitamin C and E, Glutathione and CoQ10. This coupling system keeps cellular membranes and LDL (bad cholesterol) particles from oxidizing. It restores mitochondrial function, which is the powerhouse of the cell. In the research it has been used to suppress replication of cancer cells. It is used in diabetes for macular degeneration and cataracts and stimulates better glucose metabolism. Thiotene is rapidly released and excreted in the body within 25-40 minutes. The Thiotene SR (slow release) provides a continuous six-hour delivery. This antioxidant should be part of every heavy metal detox and diabetes program, and cancer prevention program.
